What is a Death Cap Mushroom?

The death cap typically features a cap that ranges in color from greenish-yellow to brown or tan, and it may appear white in some variations. The caps can grow between 4 to 16 cm (1.5 to 6 inches) in diameter and start off round before flattening with age. A notable characteristic is the presence of a skirt-like ring on its stalk (stipe), which is white or yellowish and can be about 4 to 18 cm (1.5 to 7 inches) long. The gills beneath the cap are white and closely spaced, not attaching to the stipe.

What is a Stinkhorn Mushroom?

Stinkhorn mushrooms belong to a diverse group of fungi known for their unique and often bizarre appearances. They are primarily found in temperate regions, including areas like Wisconsin, and can appear suddenly in environments such as mulch, lawns, and bare soil. The term “stinkhorn” derives from the foul odor they emit, which is reminiscent of rotting flesh or dung. This smell serves a crucial ecological role by attracting insects that help disperse their spores.
